What is Shostakovich’s 11th Symphony about? The subtitle “The Year 1905” refers to the massacre of a workers’ demonstration in Saint Petersburg, which sparked spontaneous protests in other Russian cities. They were all suppressed. Shostakovich composed the piece in 1957, just a year after the Hungarian uprising, also drowned in blood. The circumstances of the work’s creation, even in the context of current events, send shivers down the spine. But sometimes the music says more: https://bit.ly/A1_127.

Semjon Byčkov zůstane šéfdirigentem České filharmonie až do roku 2028

Concerto – Final movement (Kenneth MacMillan; The Royal Ballet)

Youthful energy and technical precision are combined in Kenneth MacMillan’s virtuoso ballet, set to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto. Find out more and watch an encore screening near you https://www.roh.org.uk/showings/conce…

Anna Rose O’Sullivan, James Hay, Yasmine Naghdi, Ryoichi Hirano, Mayara Magri and Artists of The Royal Ballet perform the final movement of Concerto conducted by Pavel Sorokin. Concerto, a fusion of classical technique with a contemporary mind, marked the start of a new phase in Kenneth MacMillan’s career. He had recently become director of Berlin’s Deutsche Oper Ballet, and was keen to redefine the company and showcase its full range. He selected a score of youthful vivacity – Dmitry Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no.2 in F, which was created to mark the 19th birthday of the composer’s son. Concerto was greeted with a standing ovation on its premiere in 1966 and MacMillan received immediate performance requests from ballet companies worldwide.

MacMillan’s choreography complements the precision and invention of Shostakovich’s score perfectly. In the energetic first movement, the corps de ballet marches en pointe in unison, in response to a military flourish in the music. A slow, sensuous Andante follows, featuring a pas de deux that was inspired by seeing Lynn Seymour, MacMillan’s friend and muse, warming up at the barre. The final movement brings the work to a spirited close, with a large corps de ballet dancing with quick, joyous steps. Jürgen Rose’s bright designs confirm the ballet’s warmth and energy.
